Streamlined, nearly minimalistic, daypack with clamshell zipper. 20 litre capacity, three smaller zippered compartments and a number of external attachment points offer enough space and organization for most daily carry needs.
”Niukka” is Finnish for a “meager”, but not exclusively in a negative sense. Compared to our other packs in this size range the Niukka 20L is a streamlined, almost minimalistic design. Compact and clean, but fully functional and able to scale up with a number of external attachment options.
Besides the full clamshell opening main compartment the Niukka 20L has a large zippered exterior compartment, two smaller internal mesh pockets and a hydration bladder compartment. The option to attach extra gear to the bottom, front and compression straps, enable the pack to be scaled up with moderate external loads.
Details and features
Full clamshell zipper opening main compartment allows unrestricted access to every corner of the pack. The clamshell opening can be restricted by keeping the lower compression straps closed. Inside is a hydration bladder compartment, with two tie-down loops and a hydration bladder attachment webbing tab on the top. Each side of the pack has one tube port.
Two smaller zippered mesh compartments inside the main compartment allow organization of smaller items, the top one has a D-ring for securing valuables.
The zippered compartment on the front of the pack is the full size of the front and ca 3 cm deep. Good for bigger stuff like a jacket or poncho.
All zippers have generous cord loops to silence them and enable easy use with thick gloves.
Two side compression straps with G-hooks on either side of the pack offer both compression and a means of quickly strapping on extra gear. You can also use these to add extra pouches/bags to the front of the pack. Webbing loops above the compression straps can be used to secure gear with cord, carabiners or packing straps.
PALS webbing on the bottom allows attachment of extra gear using elastic cord or packing straps. The webbing loops for the side compression strap G-hooks can used to add elastic cord to the front of the pack.
The back is padded and supported with a thick and stiff closed cell foam pad, placed in an external compartment with hook-and-loop. The pad can be removed and used as a sitting/kneeling pad, and the compartment can be used for flat packed gear such as tarps.
The padded, contoured shoulder straps attach to steel D-rings. The D-rings allow the shoulder straps to turn and conform to various body shapes. The shoulder straps can be removed and replaced if needed. The sternum strap is removable and can be moved up and down the shoulder straps as desired.

I’m very pleased with the Niukka 20L. It’s my everyday bag for work, a quick trek, light shopping, daytrips and everything along those lines.
The build/layout is simple but very versatile. And adding internal or external pouches offers great flexibility.

After using the Savotta Niukka daily for my commute, I can confidently say it has completely nailed my requirements for an urban everyday carry (EDC) pack. If you are looking for a bombproof, no-nonsense bag for the daily grind, this is it.
Here is how it holds up in a daily office routine:
The Laptop Situation: My main concern was fitting a 16-inch laptop (including its protective sleeve). While it’s a tight squeeze, it fits into the hydration bladder compartment perfectly. I do have to slightly flip/fold back the top edge of the bag to slide it in and out smoothly, but it quickly becomes second nature and part of the daily routine. Once it's in, it sits secure against the back.
Capacity & Organization: Aside from the laptop, it effortlessly swallows all the daily essentials and tech pouches. The main compartment is straightforward, and the pack works beautifully for organizing tech, cables, and minor gear without feeling bulky.
Urban Performance: Even though Savotta is known for rugged military and outdoor gear, the Niukka transitions flawlessly into the city. It handles the daily commute like a champ, fits easily into tight spaces, and looks low-profile and professional enough for an office environment.
Verdict:
It’s a fantastic, durable EDC bag that perfectly fulfills all my needs in the urban jungle. If you want a pack that survives the daily commute while keeping your tech safe, the Niukka is highly recommended.

Bought this a few weeks ago for EDC to and from work. Fits everything I need or want to carry in an urban environment, and tidy appearance means it doesn’t look out of place in an office tower. Today, I took it out on a family hike in Jasper, AB, Canada, and it again proved itself up to the job. Was able to fit rain jacket and pants, water bottle and some other essentials for a May hike in the Rockies. I’m very happy with this pack, I would definitely recommend the Niukka to anyone wanting a versatile backpack.
Very good sized backpack, looks good and feels very high-quality and durable. Zippered pockets inside are very nice. Easy and comfortable to carry. Price is high but this backpack lasts at least 200 years in my use. Highly recommended!
I used the Niukka 20L backpack during my round trip through Asia this year, and it exceeded all my expectations. I have previously used backpacks from 5.11 and Snigel, but the Niukka is my new favorite and will be accompanying me on many future trips. I think the size is perfect for carry-on luggage, keeping my most important items within easy reach. The material quality is excellent.

Itsellä tämä toimii kamerareppuna parilla erilaisella insertillä, työreppuna ja välillä ollut jopa kauppakassina. Hieman olisin toivonut sisäpuolelle loop-tarranauhaa lääkintalaukun tavoin, että olisi saanut Trinket pussukoille käyttöä, mutta kannen kaksi kookasta vetoketjullista verkkotaskua ajaa aikalailla saman asian.
I have used this pack every day for the past couple of months, and it has proved to be a great little robust daysack.
Even though it is designed to be streamlined and compact, it provides enough compartments to organise your gear effectively. The manufacture and materials used are quality, making it bombproof.

My everyday carry item. I bought it to carry it in urban surroundings and also for outdoor activities. Enough space for a lot of things to carry. Very good quality like all Savotta products, but this new backpack fits perfectly in a gap, as it is the very first backpack for not outdoor use mainly. I was looking for a urban Rucksack of higher quality and I found it.
Fantastischer Rucksack! War schon auf einigen Touren dabei und ist für mich mit seinen 20L für Tagestouren vollkommen ausreichend. Da trag ich auch noch das Zeug meiner Freundin mit :) Ist bisher einer meiner besten, wenn nicht sogar DER beste Rucksack den ich bisher hatte. Ist zwar nicht ganz billig aber dafür kauft man auch Qualität. Wie heißt es doch so schön: ''Wer billig kauft, kauft zweimal'' In diesem Sinne, Ich würde es wieder tun.

Fantastic backpack! It’s already been on several trips with me and with its 20L capacity, it’s perfectly sufficient for day hikes. I even carry my girlfriend’s gear in it as well :) So far, it’s one of the best if not THE best backpack I’ve ever had. It’s not exactly cheap, but you’re paying for quality. As the saying goes: '‘Buy cheap, buy twice.'’ With that in mind, I’d definitely buy it again.

We love this backpack. The way it fully opens allow to get what's needed without digging. We use it for trips in the dessert but also perfect to fit baby stuff like diapers.

Just got mine and it already went in heavy rotation as an EDC to replace the Kahakka 25 L. It could use a separate compartment for the bladder/laptop but overall the pros far outweigh the cons, exceptional bag overall.
This weekend I tried Savotta Niukka, on a short trip during the day. The bag is incredibly easy to handle and pack things in. I had what I needed for the trip, and I could easily mount Savotta's Suur-Kukkaro on the front. The bag is simple and, as always, of the best quality.

I used this bag for the first time on my trip to Finland.
It's the perfect size for me, as I don't pack much. Because it opens completely, it's easy to retrieve items even if they're jumbled together. However, retrieving items while on the go might be a little cumbersome. For frequently used items, make good use of the inner upper pocket!
It would have been even better if there were a side compartment for drinks.

You can attach a drinking bottle to the side of the Niukka 20L by using the side compression straps and the webbing loop, for example with a carabiner. But, the bottle will require some sort of attachment point for the carabiner. You can see an example picture of this on the Niukka 20L product page.

I've had the Niukka bag for just over a month now, and I really like it. It's great for daily use, and it's more durable than the other bags I've used in the past. I like how modular it is, I can attach my Kukkaro to the front. The clam-shell design is cool because you can open up the bag entirely and have access to everything from a top down point of view. No more digging and searching for something at the bottom of the bag. The straps are comfortable, and being able to remove the cross-chest strap is nice. I don't often need to use that.
My only wish is that Savotta makes some of their bags in a high vis orange colour. If they ever do that, I will have to buy all of my bags again in that fantastic colour. I would enjoy that a lot.
