About us

What's so special about savotta?

Savotta is a family-owned Finnish company established in 1955 and located in Karstula, Finland. All our products are designed in Finland and manufactured within the EU, mostly at our own facilities here in Karstula and in Estonia. We use high-quality, traceable materials of which 97% are sourced from the EU. Built to last for decades, we prioritize quality over price.

The principle ” Tehdään niin, että kestää!” (” Let’s make these to endure!”) has been the guideline for Savotta ever since the founder Allan Halme said the words in 1955.

Our product range includes backpacks and bags, load carrying equipment, special purpose tents and stoves, various sleeping gear and accessories, designed for demanding professional and recreational use in extreme conditions. Our products are trusted by the Finnish Defence Forces, whom we have been collaborating with since the 1960's, and other professionals including military and law enforcement organizations, humanitarian aid groups, and outdoor enthusiasts who need to rely on their equipment in real-world environments.

our history in short

Long before Finn-Savotta Oy the company was called “Pylkönmäen Nahkatyö” (Pylkönmäki Leatherworks) which was founded by Allan and Marjatta Halme in 1955.

In the beginning Pylkönmäen Nahkatyö produced durable equipment for loggers; gloves, bags and backpacks, guided by the motto “Let’s make these to endure”. After World War II Finland faced heavy war reparations to the Soviet Union, and with the country’s vast forests playing a key role in funding them, logging work increased sharply, creating strong demand for reliable gear.

Later the name changed, demand and product range grew but the same principle of “Made to endure” remained at the core of everything we do. Over the decades this philosophy has carried us from a small leather workshop to a modern manufacturer of professional outdoor and defence equipment, while our roots and values have stayed the same. Today the company continues on in the hands of the third generation of the same family.

Finnish heritage in military and outdoor equipment

“Finnish origin is an important value for us internationally. We do things properly.”
- Executive Vice President and Sales Director of Savotta Jenni Valkeinen

Savotta has a long history of designing and manufacturing rugged equipment for military and outdoor use. From the very beginning, Savotta products have been shaped by practical requirements rather than trends. Durability, functionality, and reliability are at the core of everything we do. Our roots are deeply connected to Nordic conditions, where equipment must perform in cold, wet, and harsh environments. This heritage continues to guide our product development today.

“A soldier on the front line faces extremely tough conditions, so we make sure the gear we produce works flawlessly in real life situations. It provides as humane conditions as possible: shelter, warmth, and rest."

Designed for professional and demanding use

Savotta equipment is designed for users who cannot compromise on reliability. Our products are used and trusted in a wide range of demanding contexts, including:

  • military and defence use
  • tactical and law enforcement
    applications
  • bushcraft and wilderness skills
  • hiking, trekking, and
    expedition use
  • professional outdoor work

Every design choice is made with real use cases in mind — carrying heavy loads, operating in difficult terrain, and performing reliably over long periods of time.

Military-grade backpacks and load-carrying systems

Savotta specializes in robust load-carrying solutions built to last. Our product range includes:

  • military and outdoor backpacks & rucksacks
  • bags, hip packs and utility pouches
  • field camp tents and stoves
  • sauna tents and tent stoves

Many Savotta products are based on modular systems that allow users to adapt their equipment to specific missions or outdoor needs.

Our commercial product portfolio gives a good overview of our work, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. We have the capacity to produce thousands of pieces of gear for government contracts over multiple years, and the flexibility to manufacture small prototype batches for field testing when required.

Proven durability in harsh Nordic conditions

Savotta products are known for their long service life and functional design. Equipment is built to withstand heavy use, harsh weather, and repeated load cycles without compromising safety or usability.

We prioritize:

  • strong, high-quality materials and construction
  • repairability and long product life
  • functional design

Sustainability through longevity

Savotta’s responsibility philosophy is built on durability. The guiding idea “Made to endure” means that every product is designed to last for a very long time, ideally a lifetime. Durable construction, repairable designs, and long service life reduce the need for frequent replacements and unnecessary consumption. Choosing one high-quality product is more environmentally responsible than buying many cheap items that break quickly and increase global waste.

Ethical production is central to Savotta’s operations. 97% of all materials are sourced from EU manufacturers and manufacturing takes place primarily in Finland and Estonia, and occasionally in other EU countries, for example Poland. Production is always located within the EU to ensure controlled working conditions, ethical standards and traceability.

Savotta complies with EU chemical safety legislation (REACH), and most materials are certified according to ÖKO‑TEX standards.

Savotta is trusted by professional users who depend on their gear in demanding situations, as well as by outdoor enthusiasts who value reliability, simplicity, and long-lasting equipment.

Rather than following trends, Savotta focuses on building equipment that earns trust through consistent performance and proven design.
