Lapland, Finland. Jääkäri L with 6L side pouches and askare worked great for over 100km trip in 4 days!
Designed in Finland. Produced in the EU. Used by the FDF. Trusted worldwide.
The larger multi-day pack of the Jääkäri family, capacity approx. 55 litres. Based on the Border Patrol rucksack that was originally designed for the Finnish Border Guard in the 1980’s.

The larger multi-day pack of the Jääkäri family, capacity approx. 55 litres. Based on the Border Patrol rucksack that was originally designed for the Finnish Border Guard in the 1980’s.
Jääkäri L is large enough for multi-day hikes, but compressible down to a compact day pack if needed. The PALS attachment system offers great outwards scalability when you need it. Generously padded thermoformed shoulder harness and hip belt combined with an internal tubular aluminium frame allow the Jääkäri L to carry heavy and cumbersome loads comfortably.
Roll top on the top, zipper on the bottom and a cinch cord divider inside allow you to use the main pack bag in any which way you please. By opening up the divider the main bag is turned into one large cavernous space. The bottom zipper offers quick access to whatever gear you need most during the day whilst the roll top guarantees weatherproof protection for the bulk of your gear. A zippered pocket inside the lid offers safe storage for your wallet, keys, travel documents and phone.
The roll top closure, floating lid and side compression straps offer a wide range of adjustability to the volume of the pack. Strap it down tight or loosen it up depending on the carried load. The compression straps allow for further gear to be attached on the outside of the pack if necessary. A hydration compartment is attached to the interior back wall. A central hydration tube port allow you to route your hydration bladder tube from behind your neck onto either shoulder.
PALS webbing on the hip belt, sides, lid and bottom of the pack allow you to attach additional pouches and gear. This system offers numerous options for configuring the pack to suit your specific needs. Not only for pouches though, the PALS webbing can also be used to attach utility straps, shock cord, carabiners etc.
The hip belt attaches to the backpack via PALS webbing. It can be moved up or down to adjust the back length of the pack and can be removed from the frame for use as a stand-alone equipment belt. With suitable pouches attached you could use this instead of, or in conjunction with, a small daypack.
The majority of materials we use for our commercial production are the same which we use in equipment for the Finnish Defence Forces and other defence and security clients. Our most commonly used fabric in load carrying equipment is extremely wear resistant 1000D Cordura, as per FDF specs, with polyurethane coating on the inside. The webbing and edge tape we use are, again as per FDF specs, strong polyester webbing in various widths and thicknesses for different applications.
Our green and M05 camouflage materials and accessories are by default compliant with strict FDF specs for NIR reflection levels, as should be since these same materials are used in official military equipment.
An internal tubular aluminium frame keeps the pack from sagging and transfers the pack weight onto your hips even when loaded down with heavy and cumbersome cargo.
Both the shoulder harness and hip belt are generously padded with thermoformed closed cell foam padding. The shoulder harness is S-shaped and includes a removable sternum strap.
Back length adjustment is done by moving the hip belt up or down across the pack using PALS webbing. The forward pull adjustment is easy to tighten even under load. The side release buckle offers quick and easy opening when needed. The hip belt length is adjustable from 75 to 148 cm, offering an optimal fit for a waist-hip circumference (measured at the level where you prefer the top of the hip belt to sit) of approx. 80-110 cm.

Store owner replied: 🔥 Thank you for your long term review on the backpack, much appreciated!
LOVE IT! The pack seems extremely robust and comfortable. I was looking for a heavy duty backpack that should last a lifetime and it seems like I have found the right one. I haven't had the chance to test it in action but it looks super promising so far. Looking forward to put it to test.

Had this pack for 2-3 years, absolutely amazing, some might consider it overkill for uk camping one or two nights but this is top notch for the standard of gear. Built to last, you cannot complain overall with this pack The only things I can pick up on after using this is some of the straps are quite long, could do with retainers to hold them. When it is fully packed sometimes it is a bit more of a challenge then it should be to access the lower section of the pack where I personally keep my sleeping bag. Other than that absolutely amazing pack!

Same things that make this backpack great photography companion in Finnish wilderness make it a great companion in traveling overland with ferries and trains to Legoland in Billund. Slim build, without anything extra and the ability to haul some serious loads.

I ride freight trains in the USA and live outside while carrying this pack every day. bought this pack to have something that would last more than a year because no pack I have had has. I've had it for over a year now and has very much met expectations. some fraying in hard use areas, such as the inside of the hip belt but nothing irreplaceable or unrepairable. best pack I've had and would recommend.

This is truly the very BEST backpack I have ever owned. Made with top quality Finnish care, robust and comfortable to carry even with heavy loads. Proven too on trekking expeditions in SE Asia to the high altitude Himalayan trails. I love Savotta ❤️

After I was a heavy user of the Jääkäri M for several years, I decided to upgrade my larger backpack for a week long tour at the polar circle. I did not regret the investment in the backpack. With the great hip belt it worked well with attaching the pulka for the other equipment. With down to -35°C and all the snow I also learn to love the roll top closure -- which is easy to operate with thick gloves and prevents snow getting in your backpack. The long straps for the floating lid has also proven to be a high value, when you need to carry all your equipment for such a tour with the train. You can easily attach lots of other equipment under the lid. Thanks for the great backpack!

I use my Savotta L backpack for between 2 and 3 hours per day. I load it with approximately 10kg of kit and use it in all weather. So far that includes +37C to just above freezing and torrential downpours. I must also point out that I am 193cm tall and weigh 120kg. One key reason that the Savotta appealed to me was the range of adjustability the equipment offers and the ability to add pouches. On the whole it has performed fantastic I am however concerned at the amount of wear the contact surfaces on the shoulder straps and waist belt are showing. If there was one thing I would change about the shoulder straps it would be the distance from the end of the should strap padding to the buckle. This is currently approximately 30mm. I see no ergonomic reason why this could not be extended to 75mm. The current buckle position digs into my muscle between my chest and shoulders. I can imagine at some point in the future I will return my backpack to you for a service at which time I would like to discuss the possibility of a modification. So on the whole a brilliant product and just for your information I have completed well over two million steps whilst wearing it. Thank you for a great product.

This is the hiking buddy you really want when venturing deep into the wilderness. Will it give you dreamy comfort on shoulders and hips? No. Will it give you comfort and safety when alone deep in the forest and you just hauled it off a cliff. Hell yeah! I use it for everything over 3 day trips in summer and can only say that it is everything I wanted from it. Simplicity and robust design combined in the perfect backpack. Lack of "Bottle stash" or Side zipper can easily be fixed by mounting side pockets. Slap on the Hatka 12l and you can go forever (Love travelling with it, in the plane you just Check-in the Backpack and take the Hatka into the cabine). 10/10 would buy again, although I dont have to because my grandchildren will still inherit this beast.

Absolutely bombproof backpack. The carrying system is my favorite out of all the large packs I have used. The shoulder straps may seem a little stiff when new, but they soften up nicely after a couple of rucks. There is sufficient space in the pack for multiple days. By adding some side pouches and a HATKA, storage can be extended to make this an expedition worthy ruck. The lid pocket is very large, allowing quick access to maps, snacks, gloves, etc. Lastly, the tubular design of the bag really lends itself to movements through dense forests. It makes for a much better carrying experience in such environments than other similar size backpacks with wider designs.

I have now had my Jääkäri L backpack for many long years. It can be compacted down easily, although I general I look to do the opposite through adding extra pouches to the hips especially, etc. Easily fits a hydration bladder, with mine being 3L. Regarding comfort I have never had any real issues and recently completed a Kennedy march in the Netherlands, which at 80km walk within 20hrs is my longest single day walking distance and experienced no real shoulder issues due to the adjustable shoulder harness and being able to move the weight and therein any tiredness to the hips and belt. A great bag for single and multi-days walks and travel also due to being able to carry heavy loads through tight train carriages and such.

I was looking for a backpack that I could use for backpacking and hunting tours. I found it in the Jääkäri L. It looks super cool and is really comfortable to wear. Even heavily packed, it is quite comfortable. You can extend it with extra pouches, but honestly, there is only so much my legs could carry. Only thing I am missing is that there are not too many easy to reach zips and pouches. When I need something small like keys, etc, I'll have to open it a bit awkwardly... An external poch for small stuff would be helpfull.

Store owner replied: Thank you for your feedback! We're glad to hear that you're enjoying the Jääkäri L for your backpacking and hunting tours! Regarding your concern about the lack of easily accessible pockets and pouches, as you know, the PALS attachment webbing on the hip belt, sides, lid and bottom of the pack allow you to attach additional pouches suitable for your needs. Have you considered the Zipped GP pouch 2x2? This utility pouch has internal elastic loops and tie-down point for various trinkets and stuff. Thanks again for your input and enjoy your adventures!
It's okay for reservist use, and beats the issued packs. Built like a brick shit house so it will not fall apart. Could really benefit from a side opening and bottle pouches on the sides like the M version. Instead they just slapped molle on a 1980s design. The shoulder harness isn't the most comfortable out there because of the uneven padding, but it does the job. Bought it second hand so the value for money was fine, especially since mine was made in Finland. Really difficult to justify the price of a new one with the features one gets, or rather doesn't. Especially since the new ones are mostly made abroad.
